Thanks to contributor #47239568; Wahoo Newspaper (NE) - Monday, April 28, 2008 RAYMOND – Stephen J. Benes, 78, of Raymond, died April 26. Benes was born on Jan. 19, 1930, to Charles M. and Rose A. (Hajek) Benes in rural Lancaster County. He attended Clover Hill Country School, District 143 and graduated from Raymond High School in 1947. He was a Korean War Veteran. He married Eleanor M. Kraus on June 7, 1955 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Beaver Crossing. He was a lifelong farmer in the Raymond area. He was a member of Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church in Valparaiso, was a church lector and acolyte. He was a member of the Bishop Neumann School Board, Knights of Columbus, Valparaiso American Legion and NFO. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Philip and Rudy Benes; brothers-in-law, Ray Fiedler and Jerome Houdek. He is survived by his wife; children and spouses, Cheryl and Raymond Dalton of St. Louis, Mo., Laura Woodward and friend, Jim Hendricksen of Oregon City, Ore., Jim and Vicki Benes of Omaha, John and Jeanne Benes of Raymond, Alice and Lee Van Hoosen of Omaha, Susan and Tim Zielinski of Omaha, Glenn and Kerry Benes of Elkhorn, Karen and Tim Gokie of Lincoln; grandchildren, John Michael Benes, Dominic Stephen Benes, Courtney, Kristen and Katelyn Van Hoosen, Charlie and Casey Zielinski, Emily, Amanda, Anthony, Molly, Daniel and Stephen Benes, Thomas, Anna and Alex Gokie; sisters and brother-in-law, Stella Fiedler, Adeline and Ray Houdek and Elsie Houdek; brother and sisters-in-law, Richard and Gerry Benes and Bernice Benes. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 2 at Sts. Mary and Joseph Catholic Church, 637 Iver Street in Valparaiso with Father Thomas Kuffel officiating. Visitation will be Thursday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. with 6:30 p.m. Holy Day Mass and 7:30 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary with Scripture Service all at the church. Interment will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery at Agnew. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be made to the family or Bishop Neumann Endowment Fund.
