Bio

In loving memory of Shelby Jean Hoagland, 87, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, Texas, who peacefully passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones at her home in Cleveland. She was born to the late Carson and Vina Simmons Tanner in Cleveland on October 10, 1936. Jean's journey was marked by grace, devotion, and love. Jean's life was a tapestry woven with threads of dedication and compassion. A proud graduate of Tarkington High School, class of 1955, she embarked on a career journey as a bookkeeper at Lone Star Feed. She later ventured into trucking and transportation alongside her beloved husband, Bruce. Additionally, she embraced entrepreneurship, dedicating herself to cleaning houses until age 75. She was a diligent worker, devoted wife, loving mother, and faithful servant. Jean's heart overflowed with love for her family and friends, finding joy in their presence and cherishing every moment spent together. She had a passion for antiques, often exploring shops in search of treasures, and her meticulous nature was evident in her immaculate surroundings. In her youth, Jean inherited her mother's artistry of quilting and sewing, leaving behind cherished heirlooms that reflect her talent and heritage. Though she has left this earthly realm, her memory will forever be cherished by her husband of fifty years, Bruce Hoagland; her son, Bill Cole and his girlfriend, Brenda Tessman; brother-in-law, Donald Hoagland; her nephews, Chris Stoneberger; and Jack Stoneberger; her niece, Jennell Gillen; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her son Steve Cole; sisters Lilley Doris Tanner Presnull and Betty Tanner Hoagland; niece Julie Vandaver; and nephew David Gillen. Friends and loved ones are invited to honor Jean's life and legacy on Thursday, February 22, 2024, at the Sterling Funeral Home chapel, 602 N. Main St. in Dayton, from 5 PM to 8 PM. A graveside service and committal will be held on Friday, February 23, 2024, at 1 PM in Ryan Cemetery in Tarkington Prairie, officiated by Pastor Jimmy Charles. May her soul find eternal peace and her memory live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. Condolences can be shared online with the family by visiting www.SterlingFuneralHome.com
