Mary Alta Rich Pierce, age 97, of Slocum, Texas died April 24, 2008 in Castle Pines Health and Rehab in Lufkin, Texas. Burial will be in Muse Cemetery east of Slocum under the direction of Bailey and Foster Funeral Home. She was born August 2, 1910 in Anderson County to John A. and Ora Idella Powell Rich. She lived in the Hickory Grove and Slocum area all of her adult life. She was a member of the Lakeside Baptist Church in Slocum. She loved going to church and was active in all phases of church life. Mrs. Pierce was a devoted wife and homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Preston E. Pierce; brother, Travis P. Rich; and sisters, Pauline Monk, and Grace Stewart. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy S. Best and husband James B. of Lufkin; grandson, James B. Best, Jr. and wife Katrina of Kountze; granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Brown and husband John W. of The Woodlands; great-grandchildren, Brittany Kay Best, Blake Preston Best, Jessica Faith Brown, and Julianna Grace Brown, as well as several nieces and nephews. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Castle Pines Health and Rehab for all their love and care during the last five years. Published in the Herald-Press on 4/25/2008.
