The following is from a newspaper article, "Robert L. Roberts Kills John Tate" in the Columbia Missouri Herald June 18th, 1897. "The Dead Man's Life: John Tate was a native of Kentucky and was 62 years old. He wore whiskers under his chin but otherwise was smooth shaven. His head was bald. During the civil war he was a confederate soldier. He was an honest man and brave as a lion. When a section boss murdered his wife no one in the community would arrest him. Tate took a gun and brought the brute to town. Tate was buried at Red Top Sunday afternoon. Tate served in the confederate army under Capt. W. F. Roberts and Capt., now Elder and Judge, W. F. Roberts, a relative of R. L. Roberts, preached his funeral at Red Top."
