John Matthew Schwarz 1948 - 2023 John Matthew Schwarz obituary, 1948-2023, Bay City, MI BORN February 19, 1948 John Schwarz Obituary Schwarz, John Matthew Bay City, Michigan John Matthew Schwarz of Bay City, age 75, passed away on Monday, September 11, 2023 at McLaren Flint. John was born February 19, 1948 in Saginaw, the son of the late Joseph K. and Mary Evelyn (Coyle) Schwarz. He graduated from Bridgeport High School with the class of 1966 and went on to join the U.S. Navy. John studied electronics and then worked at Covenant-Harrison as a Maintenance Engineer, retiring after twenty-six dedicated years. In his early years, he enjoyed time spent on Murphy Lake with his family and being out in nature. John continued his love of nature taking walks at the Bay City State Park and downtown by the river. It was downtown at Populace Coffee Shop you could always be sure to find him every morning. Populace was his home away from home, John loved to sit and read and visit with the other patrons and workers. He was named the honorary Grandpa by many of the workers and was the sole card holder member of the "Free Coffee for Life Club." In the evenings, John enjoyed an occasional cold one at Mulligans or Jake's Bar and liked listening to the local bands. He loved learning how electronics worked, the different radio frequencies, and crystal radios – John could tinker and build the most intricate crystal radios. John and his son, Joshua, were fantastic woodworkers, building several greenhouses and sheds. He adored his two grandbabies and cherished time spent with his family. John touched many people's lives and will be missed by all who knew him. John leaves to cherish his memory, his daughter, Danielle (Josh) Halpin; grandchildren, Joshua Matthew Halpin II and Lola Elizabeth Halpin; siblings, Charles J. (Shirlee) Schwarz, Rose Ann Twiford, and Mary L. (Paul) Singer; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and countless friends. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his son, Joshua Schwarz; brother, William "Bill" (Sharon) Schwarz; brother-in-law, Michael J. Twiford. In keeping with John's wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 5:00 p.m. at Populace Coffee Shop, 810 Saginaw Street, Bay City, Michigan 48708, with Rev. Tony Jacobs officiating. After the service, visiting will continue until 7:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to the wishes of the family, c/o Danielle Halpin, for a memorial to be dedicated in John's name at Populace or consider an act of kindness or "paying it forward" to continue on John's legacy of kindness. The family was assisted with these arrangements by the Ransford Collon Funeral Home of Caro. Friends may share memories, thoughts, and prayers online at www.RansfordCollon.com. He loved me, my husband and my children like we were his own. John was a Dad to me. He was a very kind soul, always showing acts of kindness to people around him. Whether it was buying the girls at the coffee shop flowers or paying it forward to a family at a restaurant by buying their dinner. I loved spending time with him. We'd go for walks by the river or take the kids to the park. I'll miss our conversations and his emails. He was such a wealth of knowledge. He knew so much and if he didn't know something he would look it up and find out. John always liked to look at the bright side of things. He would say to think happy thoughts. He touched so many lives and will be greatly missed. I love you Soul Dad Danielle Halpin Danielle Halpin Family September 22, 2023 Will miss you John. Looked for info about wood projects and electrical problems from John. He helped fabricate a solid oak fireplace mantel for me. Will think of him whenever I look at it. He was such a good wood worker. He was a quiet, thoughtful man who loved nature. Marty and Donna Wissmueller Family September 17, 2023 We were so saddened to hear about John´s death. Tim & Judy (Schwarz) Horonzy Family September 17, 2023 In loving memory of a wonderful person. We will love you and miss you always. Andrea September 15, 2023 Firstly I wanted to say how sad I am to hear of John's passing - he was one of those people you never forget no matter how long you knew each other. I was lucky to know John during my brief time working at Populace. He was a regular that always put a smile on my face, encouraged me to be a lifelong learner, and even inspired some debates between us. He got me hooked on Khalil Gibran as an author, and even inspired me to write a poem after work one day, when he told me his philosophy on finding love with an analogy for "waiting for your ship to come in." I am writing this from Grand Rapids, MI, and will most definitely be holding John in my heart today and in the future as an inspiration for how to live life fully and memorably. I'm sending best wishes to his family, as well as the large community of folks who considered John a friend a family of their own. Kelly Yagiela Work September 13, 2023 Growing up together John was like my brother. We lived across the street from each other.
