Phyllis Mae Powers Syzdek, 96, gracefully passed away at her Las Vegas home on November 1, 2023. Phyllis was born on August 26, 1927, in York, Pennsylvania, to Russell Henry Powers and Mary Grace Andrews Powers. She moved around the country as a child with her parents and two sisters, following her father's jobs. The family settled in Brush, Colorado for the girls to attend school, while Russell traveled for work. Phyllis graduated from Platteville (Colorado) High School in 1945. After her graduation, the family moved to Las Vegas to join her dad, where she worked at the County Assessor's office. She met the love of her life, Bruno Syzdek, an airman at Nellis AFB, on a double date to Mount Charleston. They married at Saint Bridget Catholic Church in Las Vegas on September 23, 1950, and were stationed in Colorado, Georgia, Japan, Florida, and again in Las Vegas, where they retired. During these travels, their family grew, starting with Diane, followed by Steve, Mark, Laura and finally David. Throughout her life, she made friends wherever she went. These friends were not forgotten — Phyllis was a prolific letter writer and stayed connected with even her high school friends by mail or email. She was a warm and welcoming person, there were no strangers in her eyes and always room at the table for an extra plate or two. She enjoyed socializing, traveling, genealogy, and kept busy over the years with a multitude of different crafts. She loved all animals - even the scaly ones. She was an avid reader and loved her "Mr. Kindle" and iPad. She was also a great speller and loved to play Scrabble with her friends. She was a woman of faith and prayed in the morning and evening. She and Bruno were active in Scouting, the Southern Nevada Gem & Mineral Society, and at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church. She had a sharp sense of humor and was laughing and joking until her final days. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend and will be greatly missed. Phyllis was preceded in death by Bruno, her husband of 69 years, and her sisters Jean Grubke and Patricia Weeks. She is survived by her children: Diane Peiffer (Bill), Steven Syzdek (Vicki), Mark Syzdek (Karen), Laura Deter (Alan), and David Syzdek, 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Saturday, December 2, 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bunker's Eden Dale Mortuary. On Monday, December 4, a 9:30 AM Rosary will be followed by a 10:00 AM funeral Mass at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church. Interment will be 1:20 PM at the Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada or the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health Obituary from Las Vegas Review Journal, December 2, 2023
