Joan Kathryn Geardino, 76, of Malcolm, NE died Monday, November 6, 2023. Born April 4, 1947 in Ord, NE the daughter of Stanley and Agnes (Stanek) Absalon, She married Tom Geardino on August 24,1968. Joan received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Montclair State University, and her Master's Degree in English at Rutgers University. Joan began a career as a High School English Teacher in South Amboy, NJ. Leaving her job to raise her children, she eventually joined Tom to help run their businesses from full-service gas station to arcade to deli. Moving back to Nebraska in 1984, Joan eventually received her Associates Degree in Accounting at Southeast Community College while she was doing bookkeeping for Producer's Livestock Credit Corporation. After that, she became the Office Manager for Inacom (Valcomm) and other IT service firms in the Omaha area. Joan retired from full-time employment in 2012, and shortly after decided to take on a part-time role as a Child Care and Defense Fund Administrative Assistant with the Ponca Tribe in Lincoln, NE. Joan was an avid reader, and enjoyed her time alone in her garden with a good book and a glass of wine. She loved to travel, whether it was to see her family or see the world. She was a devout catholic and was involved with her church, North American Martyrs, as the communicator for bible study/book clubs. Joan loved a good debate, and could go toe to toe with anyone, in the most loving and accepting manner. And it was still a victory for her if you managed to change her mind. A loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Joan is preceded by her daughter Amy Kathryn Geardino. Survived by her brother, Dennis Absalon (Verna); sister Marilyn Coleman; sister Jean Shulo (Jake); husband Tom; son Tom Geardino, Jr.; daughter Jill Corrigan (Billy); Granddaughters Katherine Geardino, Camilla Geardino, Grace Corrigan and Alexandra Corrigan; great-granddaughters Jaela, Jaziyeah, Marcella and Lakyn; and great-grandson Kingston A celebration of life will be at 11:00am Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at North American Martyrs Catholic Church 1101 Isaac Drive, Lincoln, NE. A viewing service will be held from 4:00pm to 6:30pm, on Monday, November 13, 2023 with prayer service immediately following at North American Martyrs Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made through contributions to Ponca Tribe of Nebraska, Attn: Greg Gunderson, CFO, 5805 South 86th Circle, Omaha NE 68127. Funds will support scholarships through their educational department.
