Nathan Irvin "Johnny" Hurst was born December 2, 1911 at Amity Clark Co., Arkansas to the late Jonathan Joe Nathan Hurst and wife Rebecca Garner Hurst. In August 1912, the family moved to Kaufman County, Texas, where his father died in 1916. Twelve years later the family moved to Dallas, Texas. In the fall of 1937 Johnny met Miss Ruth Ann Kerr, high school English teacher, at a Kaufman County school carnival and on March 18, 1938 they were united in marriage by the Reverend S.C. Irvin, former pastor of First Methodist Church at Newton, Texas. In 1942 Johnny volunteered for the Coast Guard and was stationed near High Island as a Seaman First Class. After the war he owned and operated a grocery store in Rankin, Texas and from 1955 to 1963 he was proprietor of Kerr Hardware and Company in Newton, Texas. As a contractor he build the present Neal Building, Fuller's Station and about twenty homes in Newton with J.T. Harrell as chief carpenter. He also farmed, ranched and dealt in real estate. Since surgery in 1970 he has been retired. He served as city councilman and was once active as a member of the Masons, Lions and First Methodist Church. He expired at 2:30am at Medical Center Del Oro in Houston, Texas on September 29, 1984. He is survied by his wife Ruth Ann Kerr Hurst, two sons, Jonathan Irvin Hurst of Newton, Texas and James Nathan Hurst of Pasadena, California. His grandchildren are Daniel Irvin, Conner Britton and Jason R.W. Hurst, Jonathan Andrew, James Edward and Tamara Ann Hurst. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Vacie Workman and Mrs. Gladys Kelley of Newton, Mrs. Lois Kiesel of San Antonio, Texas and Mrs. Grace Lagow of Terrell, Texas as well as a host of nieces and nephews. Johnny was a kind, honest, retiring man, a hunter and fisherman, simple in his tastes, beloved by his wife and all his family and friends.
