Waterloo Daily Courier Waterloo, Iowa Thursday, January 4, 1945, page 11 J. A. FRANCIS, 71, FORMER COUNTY AUDITOR IS DEAD Succumbs at Bedford, Ia.; Was Tobacco Salesman for Many Years. J. A. (Jack) Francis, 71, for many years a Waterloo tobacco salesman and former Black Hawk county auditor, died Tuesday morning at Bedford, Ia., it was learned here Thursday. Funeral services will be in Waterloo, although arrangements have not been completed pending word from his two sons in service. He was a member of Central Christian church here, and had been active as a member of the church board of deacons. J. A. Francis was born Sept. 19, 1873, at Danville, Ill. He was married July 22, 1900, at Merwin, Mo., to the former Olive Rankin, who survives. They made their first home at Havensville, Kan., but moved to Waterloo a few years later. He was employed several years as salesman for the Martin Brothers Wholesale Tobacco co., and later worked as traveling representative for the LaPalina Cigar Co., with headquarters at Waterloo. he served as county auditor here for one term, 1919-20. Survivors include his wife and two sons, Capt. Merle R. Francis, army dental officer stationed at Honolulu, Hawaiian islands, and Navy Lt. Malcolm Francis, also a dentist, now with the public health service at the marine hospital, Buffalo, N.Y. Mr. Francis had been retired from his business the last six years, and had been in poor health since last summer. He and Mrs. Francis moved to Bedford from Waterloo two years ago. His death was unexpected, as his condition had apparently improved, it was reported.
