Wayne Burton Roelle (91) was born May 18, 1932 on his grandfather's (Henry Roelle) farm in Custer County to Walter and Myrtle (Samuelson) Roelle. He died September 20, 2023 in Lincoln, Nebraska. He attended Custer Co. Rural School District # 79 followed by graduation from Litchfield (Nebraska) High School in 1950 where he met his lovely future wife. Verla J. Rainforth. He continued his education at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, graduating in 1955 with a Bachelor of Science, and in 1966 with Master of Science degrees in Electrical Engineering. Wayne was elected to several honorary tech. societies, Tau Beta Pi, Eta Kappa Nu and Pi Mu Epsilon. He was an R.O.T.C cadet and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army Corps of Engineers, serving in the active reserves from1954-1960. He married Verla on December 2, 1951. Two children were born from this union. While working a short time in the Aero Division of Minneapolis Honeywell in Minneapolis, he was called to active duty in 1955. After attending the Amy Engineer School at Fort Belvoir, VA he was transferred to Fort Riley KS where he served as platoon leader in the 39th Combat Engineer Bn and later served as platoon leader in the 1st Combat Engineer Bn. and the 2nd Infantry Regt. of the 1st Infantry Division (the Big Red One) for two years of active duty. In 1957, he returned to Nebraska and began his career in the electric power utility field with Consumers Public Power District. He worked as field engineer in the York and O'Neill Districts. Later, he was transferred to the Lincoln Engineering office. In 1970, Consumers was merged into the Nebraska Public Power District with offices in Columbus where he became Chief Engineer of Transmission and Distribution. Leaving NPPD, Wayne joined Olsson Associates, a consulting engineering office in Lincoln. His responsibilities included planning, design and construction supervision of power plants, transmission lines and electric distribution networks for municipal electrical systems and industrial plants in Nebraska and Kansas. During this time Wayne was on a committee of the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). His knowledge of these safety codes resulted in his testifying as an expert witness in numerous civil lawsuit trials in the U.S. Wayne and Verla participated with Friends of Foreign Students at the University of Nebraska, hosting many students for 40 years. They traveled extensively in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Europe and the Far East., a total 29 countries. Wayne was an active member of St. Marks United Methodist Church since 1962. He is listed in the 2022 Who's Who in America. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Dean Roelle. Interment with military honors, 1:30 pm Monday in Litchfield Cemetery, Litchfield, NE.
