Bio

Mark M. Peterson, age 88, passed away on April 4, 2008, in Miami, Okla. He was born in Booneville, Ark., on Sept. 8, 1919. He is survived by two sons and their wives, Mark and Paula Peterson, of Tulsa, and Robert and Rose Marie Peterson, of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Tara Johnson, of Shawnee, Kan., Chris Peterson, of West Orange, N.J., Angela Peterson, of Tulsa, Drew Peterson, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Brenna Peterson, of Austin, Texas, and Leah Peterson, of Houston, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Gus and Charlie Peterson, of West Orange; by his wife of 61 years, Mary Armstrong Peterson; his five brothers; and one sister. Peterson was elected Ottawa County clerk in 1972, and served until 1981. He worked in the Ottawa County District Attorney's office until he retired. Prior to this, he worked for Safeway, managing stores in Picher, Miami, Pryor and Tulsa. He also owned and operated his own store, Mark's Moonwink Grocery in Miami. Peterson also served on the Ottawa County Excise Board. Mr. Peterson was a veteran of World War II, entering the service in 1941, and being discharged in 1945. This included serving in the First Army and Third Army in Normandy and in the Battle of the Bulge. Peterson was a member and a former deacon and secretary-treasurer of the First Assembly of God Church in Miami. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at the First Assembly of God Church in Miami. Rev. Raymond Frizzelle will officiate. Internment will follow in G.A.R. Cemetery in Miami. American Legion Post 147 Funeral Detail will conduct military rites. Professional services are under the direction of the Paul Thomas Funeral Home in Miami.
