Jay Floyd Harmer was born on August 1, 1933 in Payson, Utah to Floyd Finley and Thelma Bird Harmer and passed away a day before his 90th birthday on July 31, 2023 in Orem, Utah Jay was the youngest of three children, grew up in Payson and was active in sports, student council, plays, and various school clubs. Notably he was the Junior class president and senior class secretary at Payson High School, and played football, baseball, and acted in the plays at both Payson High and Snow College. It was during this time he was introduced to Carol Friel from Springville. They were married in the Manti Temple on July 10, 1956. She grew up with many of his cousins and jokes that she had to introduce some of them to Jay at their wedding. They attended Utah State University together and upon graduation he attended and graduated from The Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry. Jay joined the US Air Force where they were stationed in North Carolina and Colorado before leaving active duty and transitioning to the reserves. He retired from the reserves as a Lt. Col and was awarded the outstanding dental officer of the 10th Air Force. When he left active duty, their little family returned to their beloved Utah County and settled in Pleasant Grove where he would live for the next 60 years. In 1972 they would move from downtown to the property where they live now, clear some of the peach, pear, and apple trees, and create the home and yard he loved so much. You could always find him in his yard and he worked it up until several weeks before he passed away. He practiced dentistry on Main Street for 35 years. He also was active in the community, serving in the American Legion, on the junior chamber of commerce, Strawberry Days committee, as Mayor, and Co-chair (with Carol) of the Utah County Fair. Jay was an avid hunter and fisherman. With friends and family he hunted and fished all over the western United States, Alaska, and Canada. His favorite fishing spot was likely up Payson canyon at Payson Reservoir by the family cabin. Payson canyon was also a favorite for many a deer hunt. Jay was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in various callings including as a bishop and a missionary with Carol to the San Francisco California Mission. But his favorite callings were those involving the youth. On his fiftieth birthday he received a walking stick with 147 notches on it, one for every young man who had received their Eagle while he was their leader or bishop. As that was forty years ago, there would be many more notches on that stick now. Looking back on all of these accomplishments in business, sports, academics, and community service; if you asked Jay which of these was his greatest accomplishment, he would quickly reply none of them. His greatest pride was in his 67-year marriage to Carol, his four children, Sandy Fugal (Ray), Craig Harmer (Cindy), Karen Gorringe (Jan), and Lisa Young (Russ), his 19 grandchildren, and his 38 great grandchildren. Jay was preceded in death by his daughter Sandra Fugal (Ray), his parents, and his sisters, Beth Davis (Allan), and Gene Greener (Vern). Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 5th, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Ninth Ward Meetinghouse, 455 East 200 South, Pleasant Grove, UT. Family and friends may attend a viewing Friday evening from 6:00 -8:00 p.m. at the Church and on Saturday from 9:30 -10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be at the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Timpanogos Honor Guard.
