Bio
Margery Mae Sawdey Bass, 86, of Newton passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2023 at Abernethy Laurels. Born November 30, 1936 in Mellen, WI, she was the daughter of the late Everette M. and Edna Drechsel Sawdey. In addition to her parents, Margery was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Bass Jr; two sons, David Eric Bass and Randolph Kasey Bass; her sister, Dorothy Sawdey; and two brothers, Raymond Sawdey and Mahlon Sawdey. Margery was a proud veteran of the US Navy. She was a member of the National Association of Uniformed Services, the Fleet Reserve Association (Auxiliary), and the Society of Military Widows. She also retired from Frye Regional Medical Center as a nursing assistant. Survivors include her son, Mike Bass and wife Sonia of Conover; her daughter, Cynthia Bass West of Hickory; her brother, Robert Sawdey of Rockton, IL; five grandchildren, Shannon, Amy, Shaun, Jennifer, and Jessica; seven great grandchildren, Joseph, James, Javier, Jaquelene, Bryan, William, and David; and four great great grandchildren. A graveside service with military honors by the Honor Guard from Hickory Post #544 of The American Legion will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, July 7, 2023 at Conover City Cemetery.
