Clarence S. Mostek, 83, of Oxford, Nebraska passed away on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The Mass of Christian Burial Services will be held at the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska on Monday, March 24, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Thomas Lux and Father Harlan Waskoviak officiating. Interment will be in the Ft. McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell, Nebraska at 3:00 p.m. Clarence was born October 2, 1924 to Dominic and Mary (Zabawa) Mostek in Sherman County, Nebraska. He graduated from Loup City High School in 1942 and worked in Omaha until receiving his draft notice into the United States Army shortly thereafter in October of 1942. In the Army, he attained the rank of Sergeant, and served from induction in January 1943 until discharge after V-E and V-J Day in November of 1945. In Europe, he served in the 14th Field Artillery Observation Battalion of General George Patton’s Third Army in England, France, Luxembourg and Germany, including the Battle of the Bulge. He received the Croix de Guerre from General Charles de Gaulle and the people of France. After World War II, Clarence attended the Grand Island School of Business and moved into the appliance business as a manufacturer’s representative, primarily for the Kelvinator Refrigerator Company. His territory included all of the central and western counties of Nebraska. On October 20, 1951, he was married to Gloria Ann Anderson at St. John’s Catholic Church in Minden, Nebraska. Three children were born to this union: Susan, Michael and Angela. Clarence and Gloria made their home in Grand Island and North Platte until moving to Oxford in 1954 when they purchased Preston Appliance and Furniture Company. For 46 years, their retail business served a regional trade area of south-central and western Nebraska as well as northwestern Kansas. Their retirement in 1995 ended 109 years of continuous service of the Preston name in Oxford. Clarence is survived by his daughters: Susan Maaske and her husband, David of Oxford and Angela Lisec and her husband, Neil of Omaha; his son, Michael Mostek and his wife, Debra of Omaha; six grandchildren: Eric Maaske of Kearney, NE, Dr. Jill Maaske of Chicago, IL, Anna and Elizabeth Mostek and Clare and John Lisec, all of Omaha; his sister, Tena Lonowski of Creston, IA; two brothers: Leonard Mostek and his wife, Mary of St. Paul, NE and Robert Mostek and his wife, Jan of Creston, IA; one sister-in-law, Linda Johnson and her husband, LaVern of Campbell, NE; many nieces and nephews and their families, as well as other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Gloria, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Walfred and Anna Anderson, four brothers-in-law: Emil Lonowski, John Gress, Norman Lewis and William Clymer and three sisters-in-law: Elaine Mostek, Elizabeth Lewis and Harriett Clymer. Clarence loved the community of Oxford, where he served as a business and community leader. He was as a member of the Village Board of Trustees for many years and actively involved in the Chamber of Commerce and St. Michael’s Catholic Church. He steadfastly refused to relocate anywhere away from Oxford. Over the years, Clarence worked hard to retain and bring more businesses and jobs to the community. After retirement, his most earnest desire was to remain in his home and community. Clarence enjoyed his daily visits to the coffee shop and his fellowship with all, young and old. The interaction with his family and friends encouraged and sustained him in his later years. His final words to all are the words he asked to be placed on his headstone, “Peace Be With You”. Clarence will lie in state at the Mitchell-Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Oxford on Saturday, March 22, 2008 from 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. A Wake Service will be held on Sunday, March 23, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege.
