Bio

John Cech was born December 8, 1854 in the village of Dlouhy in Moravia and passed away April 12, 1939 in the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Sich, 9 miles southwest of Burwell, Nebr., at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 4 days. He spent the first 29 years of his life in his native country and for 3-1/2 years served in the army. In May 1883 he came to America and settled in Wisconsin for a few months and in November of the same year he came to Valley county, Nebr., and settled on a homestead 9 miles southwest of Burwell where he lived for 36 years. In 1886 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Kolar and to this union 4 children were born, 3 passing away in infancy. On February 8, 1913 his wife passed away and on January 15, 1914 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Anna Sebesta. In 1919 they retired from the farm and moved to Burwell where his wife passed away on June 12, 1923. In September of 1923 he was married to Mrs. Agnes Stanek, who passed away on January 26, 1937. Since that time Mr. Cech has made his home with his daughter. Mr. Cech knew the hardships of pioneer life and his interests were always in farming and he lived on the farm as long as his health permitted. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Frank Sich of Burwell, on brother, James Cech of Burwell, two grandchildren, one great-grandchild, twelve stepchildren and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted from the Burwell Christian church Friday, April 14 at 2 o'clock p. m., in charge of Rev. W. L. Goodell. Interment was in the Lutheran Cemetery southeast of Jungman hall. Mrs. Russell Mitchell, Mrs. W. B. Johnson, Jr., Tom Banks and Harry Maitland sang, "No Night There," "Rock of Ages, " and "Nearer My God to Thee," accompanied at the piano by Mrs. W. L. McMullen. Ord Quiz, [Ord Nebraska].
