Ronald was born July 25, 1949, in Tulsa to Iliff Lyon Cunningham and Regenia (Flake) Cunningham. Ron learned a great love for music, singing and playing the trombone and was a member of the Young Tulsans, an all-metro honor band. Ron graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1967 and proceeded to Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College on a vocal music scholarship and was the drum major of the marching band. Ron proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Navy band and was honored to play for the festivities of the Apollo 16 Splash Down while assigned to the USS Ticonderoga. After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy, Ron continued his education at Northeastern State University where he majored in criminal justice and music. Ron began his career with the Tulsa Police Department in 1974. Ron served in all divisions within the department, with the last half of his police career in the detective division. Ron retired in 2005 with 31 years and 31 days of service. After retirement, Ron remained active with the Tulsa Police Officer's Memorial as well as and security consulting for churches and schools. Ron married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Shari Schaum, on November 8, 1969, at Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God in Tulsa. Their marriage was an inspiration to all. Ron cherished time spent with Shari and often showed her his immense love with many romantic gestures. His favorite day was started with a cup of coffee on the patio, or the balcony of a cruise ship, with Shari. Ron was simply awesome. He was a teddy bear that spread joy and enjoyed joking with others. He looked forward to time spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was head chauffeur and daycare provider for all the grandchildren as they grew up and volunteered for numerous activities. Ron was a Godly man, serving at many churches in the area as a music leader and director, security coordinator and consultant, and Royal Rangers leader. He was a talented musician and enjoyed playing trombone in the Tulsa Community Band and Orchestra, Sand Springs Community Band, and Sapulpa Community Band. Ron served as the Band Booster President in both Sand Springs and Jenks, and was presented an Honorary Chapter Degree by the Sand Springs FFA for his service while his son and grandchildren were in FFA. Ron was an avid OU sports fan, enjoyed camping, and traveling in their RV. He will be dearly missed by all his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Iliff Lyon Cunningham and Regenia (Flake) Cunningham. Survivors include his loving wife of 53 years; four children; daughter-in-law; two sons-in-law; nine grandchildren, some spouses; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, at Carbondale Assembly of God, Tulsa. Honors will be presented by the U.S. Navy and Tulsa Police Department Honors Team.
