Edwin Louis Kneifel, 96, of Pipe Creek, passed away Sunday, September 18, 2022. Edwin was born August 25, 1926, in Dilworth, Texas to Louis and Theresa Peters Kneifel. He married the love of his life, Amalia Zissa on June 8, 1948, in St. Ann's Catholic Church near Yoakum. Edwin was a proud veteran of WWII as he had honorably served in the US Army 7th Regiment of the 1st Calvary Division from January of 1945 to November of 1946. He was stationed in Leyte, Philippine Islands and guarded the Emperor's Palace in Tokyo, Japan when the war ended. After marrying Amalia in 1948, they moved to San Antonio and once his family was established, they moved to Somerset, Texas to a small 45-acre farm where he grew a garden, plowed fields for feed and raised a small herd of cattle. While enjoying his farm, Edwin was employed for 36 years with Southwest Research Institute in their Fuels and Lubricants Research Division. Edwin retired August of 1988 and shortly after moved to Pipe Creek, Texas. Edwin loved gardening and fishing. Edwin's garden was filled with tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, broccoli, cauliflower, and sweet corn to name a few. He and his wife often worked together and canned their produce to share with friends and family. Aside from gardening Edwin was an avid fisherman. Family vacations were always along the coast where family fishing adventures created everlasting memories. He loved deer hunting and for as long as anyone can remember, Edwin always filled his deer tag on opening day until last year at the age of 95, he laid down his rifle. Edwin could fix anything. He was a gifted auto mechanic, if he couldn't fix it, it was time to buy a new vehicle. There were three principles that guided Edwin, love of God, love of family and love of country. He never missed a Mass and was certain his family didn't either. When age kept him home on Sunday, everyone in the house was up by 7:50 am ready for the 8 am televised Mass, including his dog, Dottie. He led his family in his faith and worked hard to live a life that was pleasing to God. He was a gentle and loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was selfless in his generosity to family, always putting the needs of others before his own. He cherished time with family and loved to observe the achievements of his children and grandchildren being certain to attend athletic and academic events and school plays. He knew well the freedoms we as a nation enjoy are due to the sacrifice of many brave and noble soldiers that gave their lives for the freedoms, we all enjoy today. Edwin was a patriot and because he and others like him lived, our world is a better place. Edwin Louis Kneifel, Sr is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Amalia Agnes Kneifel of Pipe Creek, daughters, Diana Frances Snell (Mike) of Montclair, VA, Darlene Marie Hicks (Ken) of Boerne, Danette Marie Sampeck (Joseph) of Blanco, son, Dennis Michael Kneifel of San Antonio, grandchildren, Dustin, April, Chantal, Jessica, Nathanael, Amanda, and Nicholas and great-grandchildren, Silas and Casey.
