CLARISSA BERRY was born about 1851 on the Berry League near Georgetown, Williamson County, Texas. She died about 1900 near Belton, Texas, and is now buried in the Rest Haven Cemetery south of Belton, Bell County, Texas. She married Henson D. Mitchell on January 30, 1868 in Williamson County, Texas. Clarissa inherited 200 acres of the Berry League after the death of her father in 1866. The Mitchells sold this property in two parts, seventy-five acres in November, 1869, and the remaining 125 acres in January, 1870. Family records show that Henson Mitchell was lost on a buffalo hunt, somewhere out west, and sometime after the birth of their daughter (Frances Jane "Fannie" Mitchell) in 1870, but specific records have not been located for verification. Little is known about Clarissa's later life, but her daughter, Frances Jane, "Fannie", Mitchell Tanner told her children that Clarissa married a man named Cain after Henson Mitchell's death, and had a second family. They lived in the Tennessee Valley Community northwest of Belton, Texas. Fannie Tanner also told her children that her mother died about 1900 and was buried in the Tennessee Valley Cemetery. Research showed that the graves from this cemetery were among those of several small cemeteries moved when Lake Belton was constructed. Tennessee Valley Cemetery graves were relocated to Rest Haven Cemetery near Belton, but Clarissa's grave could not be found. Either a grave marker was never erected for her, or it was lost or destroyed when the graves were relocated. Many of the graves are marked "Unknown".
