Thomas L. Murphree was born in 1835 at Blount County, Alabama, to Jesse Murphree and Mary "Polly" Murphree. He was raised within a very large extended family, and he had several siblings including; Tapley "Square Tap" Murphree 1828-1901 Barzilla Murphree 1832-1908 Jemima Ellen "Mima" Murphree Foster 1832-1909 Pheraby Sarah Ann Murphree 1838-1920 Bailey Murphree 1843-1863 Margaret Murphree 1852-1937 Thomas married Mary Serena Bynum on 19 Aug 1855 in Blount County, Alabama. She was the daughter of John Lewis Bynum and Rhoda "Rhody" Murphree. Thomas enlisted in the 28th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Co B, on July 3, 1862 at Murphree's Cross Roads (Oneonta), Alabama. He attained the rank of sergeant, and was killed in battle 31 December 1862 at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Mary was devastated and willed herself to die. She caught a fever the next summer and refused treatment. She died July 1863 at Tait's Gap, Blount County, Alabama. Thomas's burial location is likely the Confederate Mass Grave at Evergreen Cemetery, in Murfreesboro.
