Billee Joyce Cottrell Werby, age 96, died peacefully in her home in Redwood City on December 26, 2021. Billee was born in Luling TX on August 18, 1925. Daughter of William and Lou Ina Cottrell. Grew up in San Francisco. Graduated from Mission High School in 1943 and went directly into nurse's training at Children's Hospital SF. Active in Red Cross duties with the Cadet Nursing Corps. Graduated with her RN in 1946. Billee married her childhood chum Walter Charles Werby on November 18, 1945. They were married until his death in 1994. They raised 6 children in the house they built in East Palo Alto in 1951. They moved to Redwood City in 1968. The door at 2787 Massachusetts Ave was always open for friends and family. No one left empty handed! Billee was known as "Everybody's Gramma." Billee worked as the night shift nursing supervisor at Children's Hospital at Stanford for 25 years and retired in 1984. Billee kept her RN license current and earned continuing education units well into her 80s. Her other profession was FAN, of the SF Giants and 49ers. She never missed a game. Billee was active in her youth at Grace Methodist Church SF. She had a passion to help others when and wherever she could. After retiring from nursing she became a volunteer at Kennedy Middle School. She found a community there and was popular with students, parents, teachers, staff and administration. She received the Sequoia Awards 2014 Outstanding Individual award that speaks to her legacy of volunteerism and kindness. She was known for her generosity and her famous Oatmeal Crispies. Billee was predeceased by Walter (1994), daughter Jaynee (2006), son Jim (2007), daughter Judy (2014). She was the last of her generation of Cottrells and Werbys. Survivors include daughters Jan Tillotson, Jerri Schoenstein, Jennell LeBlanc, grandaughter/daughter Jayme Werby. She leaves behind many many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, scores of nephews and nieces and many friends who are family. A celebration of Billee's life will be held on Saturday, March 12, at 2pm at the Highlands Community Club 1665 Fernside St, Redwood City. There will be an open mic so please bring a song to sing or story to tell. Billee's favorite charity is Huntington's Disease Society of America: sanfrancisco.hdsa.org
