Bio

James Lynn ("Butch") Thompson was born in Bonham, Texas on September 1, 1947, to Doyle Thompson and Ava Eudene Sartin Thompson. He attended elementary and high school in Grand Prairie and graduated from Dallas Baptist University with a business degree. Jim had lots of interesting jobs in his life…beginning with being an electrician's apprentice. He also worked in Research and Development at LTV in Grand Prairie. Jim started two companies…one with his brother and one with his best friend, Fred Sivley. Jim worked in the wire and cable industry for a company based in Mexico City. He learned enough Spanish to communicate in business meetings when in Mexico. Jim represented a high-density plastic product that was used in many industries, including lumber/timber, fishing/marine, and poultry. One of his proudest achievements was as the Project Manager for the electrical installation (including rails) of the Sky Link "People Mover" at DFW Airport. Jim always had some type of hobby or activity that kept him busy. He loved golf, hunting, photography, grilling & baking, camping, playing bridge, playing "42" & dominoes, wood working, shooting pool, his guitars, camping, and scuba diving at Lake Travis, Possum Kingdom, and Palancar Reef in Cozumel. With each of these hobbies, Jim went "whole hog" to get all the accessories required to fully enjoy the activity. In addition to an old army jeep, Jim once bought a "very used" dune buggy. The family rode it often to go off-road on the trails located next to Highway 360 in Arlington. We still have the video to show the lack of seat belts and the children riding in the back…high above the roll bars…the roll bars striking them right about chest high. Hopefully, the statute of limitations will protect us! Talk about adventure! The family took lots of fun vacation trips…including scuba diving in Cozumel, Mexico, and a visit to the nation's capital. Jim loved being an altar server, lector and Eucharistic Minister at his church. He was involved on the finance committee, the Parish Council, and with the youth ministry. He just loved people in general. Jim married Donna Jean Furtick on December 2, 1967. They have two children and six grandchildren. Jim donated his body to medical research through the Willed Body Program at the University of Texas Southwest Medical Center in Dallas. Interment will be at Holly Hills Memorial Park in Granbury in the Chapel of Faith at a later date. Jim is survived by his wife, Donna; brother, Tommy Thompson (wife, Lynda); brothers-in-law, Chris Furtick (wife, Donna Marie) and Benny Furtick (wife, Martie); Children: James Bradley Thompson (Lisa), Rebecca Jean Van Buren (Kelly); Grandchildren: Hannah, Jennifer, Lincoln, Jake, Case, and Jessica; and many precious nieces and nephews; and dozens of dear relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers or gifts, you may wish to make a donation to research through the Parkinson's Foundation at Parkinson.org.
