Newspaper Article from Unionville Public Library dated 9/2/1903 KILLED BY LIGHTNING Joseph E. Collins of Martinstown Struck by Fatal Bolt Last Thursday During a thunderstorm last Thursday afternoon about 3:30 o'clock Joseph E. Collins and his brother in law Cyrus Crooks took refuge in a barn belonging to the latter's brother J.W. Crooks, one-half mile east of Martinstown. They had been riding their horses and after hitching them Mr. Collins stepped to the door to tell a man who was passing on horseback "to come in out of the wet" when a bolt of lightning struck the barn and running down the post near which Mr. Collins was standing, it struck him in the left cheek, went down the side of his face and neck across his chest and bowels, burning him quite badly. Cyrus Crooks who stood close to him was knocked to the ground but only momentarily dazed. With the help of the passing rider, previously spoken of, he carried Mr. Collins out of the barn which had caught fire immediately and removed the horses, harness, buggy, etc. from the lower floor of the barn. That structure was soon ablaze and quickly burned to the ground. Mr. Collins was carried to the house where everything possible was done to restore him to consciousness and fan the spark of life into a flame, but the shock was too great and he died at 1 AM Saturday. Deceased was 33 years of age and was a man of remarkable physique - to this fact may be attributed his remarkable vitality, after having received a stroke that would have instantly killed a weaker man. A wife (who was Miss Myrtle Crooks) and two sons aged 6 and 2-1/2 years are left to mourn the irreparable loss of husband and father. Mr. Collins was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Collins and was born and raised in the neighborhood in which he died. He was a sturdy, honest, upright soul whose list of friends ceased only at the limit of his acquaintance. The burial took place Saturday at Martinstown, the services being conducted by Judge Lester Husted, a lifetime friend. One of the largest assemblages of the kind in the history of the county was present to pay their last respects to the dead, and give manifestation of their sympathies for the bereaved. __________________________________________________________ *Thanks to Linda for the article above.
