San Diego Heath, Jovita Vela -- Jovita Heath spent 21 years at the Springs Apartments in La Mesa. She enjoyed the friendship of many of the tenants of that apartment complex. Recently her health and the advancing ravages of Alzheimer's disease demanded her moving to a local elderly care facility. She died there on Saturday, October 8, 2005 at age 97. She was born Jovita Vela on February 15, 1908 in Mercedes, Texas. In 1924, she married Thomas B. Heath with whom she had five children. Her husband and three of their children preceded her in death: Ida of Texas, Jim Heath of Nebraska and Mary Alice Shipley of San Diego. Jovita is survived by two sons, Thomas Heath, Jr. of San Diego and Robert Heath of Shreveport, LA. Jovita's oldest daughter Ida had two children, Emma Apperley of Fairfield, CA and Frank Heath of Las Vegas, NV, whom Jovita and her husband lovingly adopted upon Ida's death in 1953. Those two adopted children also survive her. In addition, Jovita is survived by 15 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Per her request, Jovita was cremated immediately. Only private memorial services were conducted.
