Bio

The hearts of all in this community were filled with sadness when the report came that Mrs. J. A. White, wife of Mayor White, has suddenly passed away from a heart attack Tuesday morning. She first complained of being ill Monday morning and went to bed. The family physician was called, but no alarm was felt for her condition. However, Tuesday morning it was decided that she should be moved to the hospital. It was while she was being taken to the St. Mary's hospital in the Duesman Mortuary Ambulance, as it neared Platte Center, that she suffered the heart attack and quietly passed into eternal sleep. Funeral service will be held at the St. Francis Catholic church at 9 a.m. Friday morning with Rev. Father Albert Limacher, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be John Preister, Tony Schaecher, H. G. Machmueller, Conrad Ternus, H. C. Lachnit and J. A. Zavadil. In her respect the business houses of the city will be closed during the hour of the funeral and members of the Christian Mothers society and American Legion Auxiliary, of which the deceased was a member, will attend the services in a body. As Margaret Elizabeth Costello, the daughter of Mr. And Mrs. John Costello, she was born on the farm of her parents, 14 miles northeast of Schuyler, [Nebraska,] Nov. 13, 1900. She spent her girlhood days in that community and later entered St. Bonaventure's academy at Columbus [NE] to complete her education. On June 14, 1922, she was united in marriage to J. Ambrose White, and they went to Horace, Nebr., to make their home, Mr. White being a manager of the T. B. Herd Grain company there, and a year later they moved to Primrose, where Mr. White had been transferred. They resided there until October 1926, when Mr. White was transferred to Humphrey to take charge of the Herd interests here and they have since made their home. She will be remembered as a thrifty, hardworking woman, she and her husband having felt a deep pride in their family, their home and the community in which they chose to make their home. She was not much given to the social activities of the community but centered all her devotion and love in her home and her family. She took active interest in the civic affairs of her church and fashioned her life in the tenants of the Catholic religion which she had espoused in childhood. She was a God-fearing lady, a good wife and a good mother, a kindly neighbor and a warm-hearted friend. She will be sadly missed in the family circle and the community, and we know the Good Lord Who had called her to her heavenly home will bring sunshine again into the hearts of those whom she had left behind to mourn her departure. Besides her husband, she is survived by six sons and one daughter – James, John, Leo, Thomas, Patrick, Edward and Mary Kathleen. One son, Francis Joseph, died in infancy. Also surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Costello of Schuyler; five sisters, Mrs. Anderew Stollenbery of Schuyler, Mrs. Jos. Worthing of Omaha, Mrs. Cyrus Whitehead of Loup City, Miss Helen Costello of Omaha and Miss Veronica Costello of Denver and two brothers, James and John Costello of Schuyler. They with Mrs. Sarah White of Mrs. W. K. Harmon of Los Angeles, Calif., Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Rosscheart, Mr. and Mrs. James White and Leo White, all of Omaha are here to attend the funeral. Business Houses Will be Closed Friday at 8:45 A. M. Through the request of the Village Board, the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary the various business houses in Humphrey will close at 8:45 a.m. Friday April 5, and will remain closed until after the funeral services to be held for the late Mrs. J. A. White, which will be held at St. Francis church. The Humphrey Democrat April 4, 1940
