Graveside services for W.J. "Jack" Hammer, 83, of Athens are scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas with Chaplain Denny Burris officiating. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Cooper Funeral Home of Athens.Mr. Hammer was born Sept. 3, 1924, in Hubbard, Texas to William and Daisy Medlin Hammer. He attended schools in Hubbard graduating in 1941. He entered the U.S. Marine Corp. in 1941 and served with the 3rd Marines in Guadacanal, Iwo Jima, Bougainville and Guam. After his military service he was employed as a civil service firefighter at the Connelley Air Force Base in Waco. In 1952 he joined the Dallas Fire Department and served as a driver engineer until retirement in 1974. He established Lavastone of South Texas in Houston and retired again in 1986. The Hammer family moved to Star Harbor in 1986.Mr. Hammer was a 32nd degree mason and shriner. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and traveling. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Mike Hammer.Survivors include his wife, Madalyn Hammer of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Ruth Mahoney of Athens; nephews, Craig Corley of Dallas, Steve Corley of Duncanville; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.The family will receive condolences at the funeral home Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Published in the Athens Daily Review on 2/16/2008.
