Bio

A celebration of the life of Clara Bernice Gatlin, 87, of Longview, will be at 10 a.m. today, February 14, 2008, at the chapel of Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road, with Chaplain Rick Webb and the Rev. David English officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Mausoleum. Mrs. Gatlin passed away on Monday, February 11, 2008, at a local medical center. Mrs. Gatlin was born May 9, 1920, in Bald Prairie of Robertson County, to Benjamin C. Browning and Mollie Nash Browning. Bernice was the youngest girl in a family of 12 brothers and sisters. They moved to Gladewater in 1937, and she graduated from Gladewater High School in 1938. In 1939, she married Curtis Prince who died in 1945 as a result of a motorcycle accident. Left as a widow with two small girls, she worked in retail, ran a paper route and sold cosmetics. After the war, she married Woodrow Gatlin. Together, they made the U.S. Air Force their career, living in England during the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Together, after returning to the states, they lived in Washington, California, Mississippi, Michigan and Arizona. In 1962, they moved to White Oak where she was once again widowed. Bernice obtained her L.V.N. degree and worked at Good Shepherd Hospital, Bloom Clinic in Gladewater and Highland Pines Nursing Home in Longview. Her real joy was private nursing, and she was honored as Nurse of the Year. Bernice was a devout Christian and lifelong member of the Church of Christ. She enjoyed life, caring for others, and she never met a stranger. She volunteered for several years with the Longview Convention and Visitor's Bureau. In 1999, she moved into Buckner Westminster Place where she chaired the Ambassador committee and was the "official" Buckner photographer. She enjoyed extensive world travel with friends and family. Bernice is survived by her daughters, Patti Snyder Harwell and husband, David of Longview, Jeannie Dollahite and husband, Jerre of Hallsville, and Dee Brint and husband, Randy of White Oak; son, Don Gatlin of Hawaii; grandsons, Todd Howell of Dallas, Corey Howell of Hallsville, Chuck and Lori Robinson of Coldspring, Jeff and Mandy Brint of Addison, Jason Brint and Sheri Jennings of Austin, and David Harwell Jr. of Dallas; great-grandchildren, Zachary DuQuette and Hannah Howell of Dallas, Alicia Thomas, Austin Howell, Aaron Howell and Andrew Howell, all of Hallsville, and Sebastian Brint of Austin; sister, Johnnie Gage of Pritchett; sister-in-law, Lou Browning of Breckenridge; a multitude of nieces and nephews; and enough friends to fill a stadium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Buckner Children's Home, 5200 S. Buckner Blvd., Dallas, TX 75227. The family wishes to express their profound thanks to the staff and residents of Buckner Westminster Place for giving their mother many years of happiness, and to Summer Meadows and Janice Dennis for their excellent care.
