Martha N. Schaefer May 13, 1942 - December 7, 2022 Martha Nell Schaefer, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, in Temple, Texas, after a long illness and twice surviving cancer. She was born in Stephenville, Texas, to parents, Herbert Petry and Grace Eudora Petry Bonner. The family relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, after the passing of her father. There, she attended North Side High School where she proudly participated in their pep squad which performed at football games as well as events such as the long-running Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. She met her future husband, Emil "Buddy" Schaefer at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. They wed in Cleburne, Texas, at a ceremony officiated by Buddy's father. After graduating from Tarleton, Mr. Schaefer was drafted into the US Army to serve in the Vietnam War. While like many other soldier's wives, Martha endured the time until his safe return. Martha was vigilant and sent Buddy letters and gifts as often as possible which kept his spirits up; he praised her for being a wonderfully supportive wife during such a hard time in his life. Upon his return, they started their family. Martha enjoyed planting flowers, quilting, sewing, pottery, painting and ensured her children were introduced to the culture of art museums and the symphony. Martha also enjoyed watching horse races in Ruidoso, NM and Hot Springs, AR where she always seemed to have good luck with her bets. She enjoyed visiting the beach and collected shells and often reminisced of living in Galveston as a young child. Martha greatly adored her grandchildren and ensured her, and Buddy spent as much time with them as possible. She will always be remembered by her beautiful blue eyes and smile. Martha was preceded in death by her husband, Emil "Buddy" Schaefer and sister, Sue Burns. Martha is survived by her three children; two grandchildren; her brother; and her beloved cat, Shadow. A Memorial service will be held on December 23, 2022, at 2 PM at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Porter Loring Mortuary
