Bio

Doris Elliott Truman entered into Eternal Rest in the Presence of her Lord on Monday evening, August 8, 2022. Affectionately known as Mama and Moddie to those who knew and loved her best, she had been under the tender care of her children, in her own home, for the last six years after suffering a series of strokes. She continued to enjoy regular visits from her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren and still hosted Christmas Breakfast when all 40 would gather in her home. Born in Marion, North Carolina on Groundhog's Day in 1931, she was the last living of four siblings. At the age of 15, she moved to the Peninsula and met her husband, Bill, shortly after. The two remained in Hampton, where they raised their four children and enjoyed the next four generations of the fruit of their union. They were married for 59 years when Bill preceded his Doris in death. Doris was a devoted member of West Hampton Baptist Church and attended regularly before she became homebound after her first stroke. Though she is no longer with us, the family rejoices in knowing she is with her Lord and reunited with family and friends. The family is incredibly thankful for the excellent care given to her by the Sentara Hospice Team. A graveside service will be held on Monday, August 15 at 3:00 p.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park on Warwick Blvd in Newport News. Arrangements are under the care of Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA.
