Bio

Joe Fowler Brooks, 78, of Denton died Sunday, Feb. 4, 2007, at a Denton hospital. Graveside service: A private ceremony will be held in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Mulkey-Mason Jack Schmitz & Son in Denton is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Brooks was born March 31, 1928, in Fort Worth to Ernest Jefferson and Marie Fowler Brooks. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in Fort Worth. He attended the University of Texas at Arlington, where he met his future wife and later received a bachelor of arts in education and a master of education at the University of North Texas. Mr. Brooks served as store manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. from 1958 to 1960 and as an elementary teacher in Grapevine and at Woodrow Wilson Elementary in Denton from 1961-1967. In 1967, he was appointed the first principal at J.L. Ginnings Elementary School in Denton, where he served until his retirement in 1985. Memberships include National Education Association, Texas State Teachers Association, where he was a two-term past president, charter president of the Denton Independent School District Administrators Association, board of directors of the Texas Political Action Council, and member of the Denton Kiwanis Club. He was past deacon and elder at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church and a former member of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Honors include Denton City Council PTA Scholarship Award for Outstanding Teacher 1966 and Personalities of the South 1973. Survivors: His wife of 58 years, Delore Smith Brooks of Denton; daughters, Tamera Joe Grossman and husband, Robert, of Watauga and Rebecca Mae Fuller of Mansfield; sons, Kerry Allan Brooks and wife, Carla, of Carrollton, Jeffrey Lee Brooks of Keller and Richard Dale Brooks and wife, Lanee, of Flower Mound; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
