"Roots of the Shannon Family First Edition Jan. 1987" by Lloyd M Shannon Robert (Bob) Shannon said that he was raised on a farm near Anniston, Alabama. The Federal Census Records shows this family to be living in Calhoun County (county seat-Anniston) Post Office Wehaga, Alabama 1860 and 1880....Robert (Bob) Shannon married Martha Ann Hudson 1886 Calhoun Co Alabama and lived there until 1894. Three children were born to this family in Alabama. It is a known fact that the family of Robert (Bob) Shannon migrated from Alabama to Texas in 1894. They settled on a 167 acres farm three miles east of Iredell, Bosque County, Texas in the community of Rural Grove. Early settlers called it "Foot Out." They built and lived in a log cabin, which in later years after completing their home, was used as a barn. This building can be remembered by some descendants living today. June 1946, the fourth child was born to this family, Mary E. Shannon. Also moving to Texas about the same time was James H. Shannon and his daughters (no record of his wife) and Christopher Columbus (Lum) Hudson and wife Sarah Elizabeth (parents of Martha Ann Hudson Shannon) and their family. Rural Grove Baptist Church was organized 7 October 1894. This writer (Lloyd M. Shannon) inherited the original records of this church from the time it was organized until about 1917. These records have provided a valuable source of information about the early times in Bosque County. It is intended that in the future they will be on display in the Bosque County Historical Society in Clifton, Texas for other genealogists and historians to use. From these records it was found that on 4 April 1896 the following presented themselves for membership: C. C. Hudson, S.E. Hudson, Maud Hudson (daughter), Mary Rhodes (daughter), R.B. Shannon and wife M.A. Shannon. Also it was found that R.B. Shannon was ordained a deacon in that church 8 March 1902. A list of membership after the turn of the century included other family members which are: J.M. Shannon, Arry Shannon, Pearl Shannon, Milton Waldrep (who later married Pearl Shannon), Malchus Shannon and wife Myrtle (Waldrep) Shannon. According to the church record,s Robert was appointed messenger to the Meridian Southern Baptist Conference Meetings. He would travel across the county by horse and buggy to represent his church at these meetings. Martha Ann Shannon was blind from about 1925 until her death in 1946. During the early years of her blindness, she walked to church (about two miles) many times on the arm of her husband or son, Malchus. Robert was ordained deacon in 1902 and son, Malchus was ordained minister about 1920." Bob and Martha had 4 children Arry D Shannon b AUG 1886 Ala +G.W. M. Shannon in Iredell. He was converted and joined the Methodist Church at an early age. When about 30 years of age, he joined the Baptist Church and was ordained a deacon when he was 40 and served in that capacity as long as his health would permit. He lived the life of a devout Christian and the influence that came from his Godly life will live on. When he was 25, he was united in marriage to Martha Ann Hudson. To this union, three daughters and one son were born. The youngest daughter, Mary Elizabeth, preceded her mother in death. Mr. Shannon moved with his family to Texas in 1905. Services were held in the Iredell Baptist Church by Rev. Kirchner of Meridian. Rev. Lester of Hico was called to help but he was called to Meridian on account of the death of his brother-in-law. Surviving are his wife; two daughters - Mrs. M.A. Waldrop and Mrs. G.W. Cunningham; one son - Rev. M. Shannon; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Hico News Review July 28, 1933
