Bio

Billy (Bill) Raymond Shelton, age 91, passed away Jan. 5, 2021 following a stroke. His family, friends and many professional associates will forever be inspired by his kindness, work ethic and commitment to his community. Bill was born in Dust Bowl and Depression-era Lubbock, Texas, on Jan. 3, 1930 to Raymond and Eva Shelton. Bill spent his early years in Slaton, Texas, later moving several times across the state as his father pursued a career with the Santa Fe Railway. After graduating from Amarillo High School in 1948, Bill briefly studied art in Pueblo, Colorado. He then transferred to the University of Texas at Austin to study marketing and joined Delta Sigma Phi fraternity. He paused his studies to join the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He completed Army officer training courses at Fort Riley, Kansas, and Fort Benning, Georgia. Bill continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserve for 13 years. Upon returning to his university studies, Bill met his life-long partner, Roberta Mae Anderson, while they were both students cheering on the Longhorn football team. Bill and Roberta married in San Antonio on Dec. 20, 1954. In their early years together, Bill worked as a research economist with Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. In the early 1960s, Bill was appointed by Governor Connally to serve as Assistant Director of the Texas Industrial Commission in Austin, and by 1970, became President of the Texas Economic Development Council. A recognized leader in the field of economic development, Bill worked for 20 years for the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce starting in 1968. He served as Chamber President for 14 years, playing an important role in bringing jobs and industry to Fort Worth, including American Airlines. Upon leaving the Chamber, Bill worked as an economic development consultant in a partnership and later enjoyed a long association with Buxton. His many civic activities include serving on the Board of Directors of Huguley Memorial Medical Center, the Aledo Texas Economic Development Corp., and the Texas Aerospace and National Defense Technology Council. Bill and Roberta raised their three children in Fort Worth before retiring to Aledo, Texas. His last years were spent in Fort Worth, returning home to the city he loved. Bill had many interests, including a passion for nutrition and fitness that started long before it was trendy, and he especially enjoyed hiking in Colorado. He had a love for the history and art of Texas and the Southwest and through the years collected a variety of pottery, paintings, and bronzes. Bill loved to cook and will be remembered for his famous Shelton's Sensational Super Salt, which he made in large batches and gave to his friends at Christmas.
