April 22, 1924 - November 22, 2010 Teacher-Coach Sonora resident, "Ham" Manzel died of Huntington's Disease Monday Nov. 22, 2010 at his home. He was 86. Ham was born and raised in Fremont, NE and attended Fremont City Schools. As a child, Ham was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He served in the U.S. Army in 1943. Upon returning from military service, he attended and graduated from midland Lutheran College, Fremont, NE in 1948. During his years at Midland College, Ham was the Nebraska state mens' singles tennis champion in 1946 and 1948. In those same years, with partner, Joe Chrisman, they won the Nebraska state mens' doubles tennis championship. The Petrow Memorial Trophy was awarded to Ham at Midland Lutheran College for "Outstanding Athlete of the Year" for Basketball, Tennis, and golf excellence. Ham received his Master's Degree from the University of Nebraska, at Omaha in 1950. Both Bachelor's and Master's Degrees were in education and administration. His teaching career encompassed high school business subjects and coaching. At Wolbach, NE, Ham was school superintendent, principal and coach of basketball, tennis, football, and track and field. Additional Nebraska teaching assignments were in the towns of Battle Creek, Wolbach, Oxford and Lexington . Upon moving to California, Ham taught at Santa Ana, Turlock High School, Modesto Junior College, Mt. Whitney High School and College of the Sequoias, Visalia, and Sonora High School . He was a CTA life member. Ham's other interests and activities included All-Around-Wunders and Penny Arcades Round Dance Clubs, Twain Harte Twirlers Square Dance Club, and Kiwanis. He volunteered at Interfaith and served on the board of the Lutheran Social Services of Northern California. He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Karen Manzel, daughter and son-in-law April and Jim Thiede of Visalia , CA, Mother-in-law, M. Odetta Lewis of Sonora, CA, and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, Frank and Edna Manzel, brother Marvin Manzel, and sisters Mern Pfeiffer, Nona Babe, Goldie Palensky and Dorothy Reier. A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at 10:30 AM at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 13880 Joshua Way , Sonora , CA .
