Bio

Helen Rose Vacula, 79, of Woodway, passed away Jan. 1, 2008, at home surrounded by her family. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 2 p.m. Friday, at St. Jerome's Catholic Church with Father Raj officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd. Helen was born near Watt, Texas, to the late James and Agnes (Beralek) Pavlovsky. She graduated from Mart High School and Providence Hospital School of Nursing. She married Edward Vacula in 1952. Helen worked at the VA Medical Center for 26 years retiring in 1988. She was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and RVOS. Helen was active in the Women's Society at St. Jerome's Church in addition to serving as usher and greeter. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1983; and brothers, Raymond and George Pavlovsky. Survivors include her daughters, Elaine Winniford and husband, Sherm, and Kim Blackshear and husband, Richard; grandson, Beau Blackshear; sisters, Ann Thomas, of Alhambra, Calif., and Amy Roberts, of Templeton, Calif.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and her special friend, James Kaatz.
