Veteran - U S Marine Corps ----------------------------------- McFarlin, Lyle ("Mac") Henry, baptized into the hope of Christ's resurrection, Friday, February 4, 2022. Beloved husband of the late Kathy F. McFarlin; dearest father of Christine, Karen (Don) Hutson, Keith, and Timothy (Amy) McFarlin; grandfather of Amy, Ryan, Fiona, and Nicholas; brother of Danford "Dan" (Barbara) McFarlin; uncle, great-uncle, great-great-uncle, brother-in-law, cousin, and friend. Lyle was born in Le Mars, Iowa, to Lyle D. and Linda M. McFarlin, and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1957, he enlisted in the U.S. Marines at age 17. Stationed in Okinawa, Japan, he drove a Patton M-48 tank in the 3rd Tank Battalion, 3rd Marine Division, 3rd Fleet Marine Force. He was honorably discharged in 1959 at the rank of Lance Corporal. Lyle then attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska - Omaha with bachelor's degrees in French and German, serving as president of its Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity chapter. It was there he met Kathy Welniak, the love of his life. They wed in 1965, having four children and four grandchildren in their fifty-one years of marriage. Lyle continued to serve his country as a civilian. In a career spanning five decades, his work included time as a civil rights investigator; as Chief of Management and Employee Relations for U.S. Forces in Nuremberg, Germany; as Regional Director of the U.S. Army Civilian Appellate Review Agency, St. Louis Region; and as Chairman of the Federal Executive Board. He earned a Master of Arts degree from Webster University while working. He strove to make real the ideal of equal justice under the law and to uphold the integrity of the public service. In retirement Lyle remained active in many endeavors, including as a volunteer for the St. Louis County Elections Board, the USO at Lambert Airport, and Toys for Tots. Closest to his heart was his service with the Marine Corps League, where current and veteran Marines help their communities and each other. He served in several leadership roles, including his election as commandant of the Private George Phillips Detachment in 2018. Like his father, Lyle never met a stranger; he loved to talk with everyone. To know him was to love him. He will be missed.
