Edith Marie Kocurek passed away Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2022 at the age of 97. Edith was born Aug. 11, 1924 in Schulenburg to Eddie Watzlavick and Edna (Vacek) Watzlavick. She married Frank Emil Kocurek on May 27, 1943 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. They shared 55 years of marriage together and had two sons, Frank Edward and Donald. Her family loved her chicken fried steak and often requested it at Christmas instead of turkey and dressing. Her recipes for forgotten cookies, broccoli salad and pea salad were also favorites requested by family and friends. She loved her family above all and they were always her first priority. Edith was a real "people" person and was affectionately known as "Granny" to all who knew her. She had a very witty sense of humor, infectious smile and spunky personality. She never met a stranger, even when in a doctor's office waiting room, by the time she was called in she knew all the people in the room and where they were from. She loved hosting and attending the Thursday night supper parties and talking on the phone to her friends and family. She and her husband owned and operated Watzlavick Food Store for many years until it closed in 1989. After that she worked as a clerk and sales person at Apothecary Pharmacy. An unparalleled salesman, she loved to talk and visit with customers and could "sell ice to an Eskimo," Edith has always been an active member of the community. When her boys were young she acted as a school room mother and bus chaperone. She was a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Rose 1597 serving in many offices including regent. She was very active and went to many conventions representing the Schulenburg Court. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary serving as recording secretary for many years. She was a Herman Sons Life member and received the Humanitarian of the Year Award. Its memorial tribute ceremony was organized by her each year for many years. She volunteered at Schulenburg ISD as part of the "Granny Reading Program" reading stories to children. She also volunteered at the local nursing home with bingo and delivering care packages to residents. The Literary Club always counted on her help to bake cookies, sell library dinner tickets and raise money for the library. She is survived by son, Donald J. Kocurek and wife Ashley of Schulenburg; daughter-in-law, Laura Kocurek of Cuero; former daughter-in-law, Connie Kocurek of Schulenburg; three grandchildren, Brad Kocurek and wife Emily of Cuero, Jared Kocurek and wife Emily of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Ariel (Kocurek) Faith and husband Kris of Schulenburg; two step-grandchildren, Audrie Jasek and Caleb Brooks of Schulenburg; five great-grandchildren, Frank Allen and Logan Kocurek of Cuero, Judah Kocurek of Little Rock, Arkansas, and Colton and Olivia Faith of Schulenburg; step-great-grandchild, Teagan Faith of Schulenburg; along with other nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and Edna Watzlavick; her husband, Frank Emil Kocurek; son, Frank Edward Kocurek; and brother George Watzlavick and wife Laura. Funeral arrangements were made by Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home and a private funeral service was held at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22. Following the Mass, a private graveside service was held at St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Cemetery in Dubina. Pallbearers were Brad Kocurek, Jared Kocurek, Kris Faith, Colton Faith, Caleb Brooks, Gary Helmcamp, Mark Klesel and Bryan Klesel.
