Bio

Steven Wayne Hilbers February 6, 1961 - October 16, 2014 Steven Wayne Hilbers, 53, of Seymour, Texas, passed away peacefully in his home on October 16, 2014 at 10:10 A.M., under the care of Integracare Hospice, after suffering a massive stroke. He was surrounded by his wife and children at the time of his passing. Memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the Seymour Memorial Funeral Home Chapel, with Doyle Wade, chaplain of Integracare Hospice officiating. A visitation will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday morning at the funeral home. Steven was born in Wichita Falls, Texas on February 6, 1961, to Betty Hilbers, and moved to Scotland, Texas in 1969 with his mother and father, Betty and Bernard Hilbers. He attended school in Archer City and graduated from Archer City High School in 1979. He worked for and operated a dairy for 5 years, and then attended the Police Academy in 1986. After graduating, he worked as a Police Office in Weatherford and Bowie, Texas, and then became employed with the Archer County Sheriff's Office, where he worked his way up to becoming Chief Deputy Sheriff under the direction of Sheriff P.L. Pippin. While working for the Archer County Sheriff's Office, Steven received specialized training in Advanced Latent Fingerprinting, Certified Fire and Arson Investigator, Rescue Diver, Investigation of Violent Criminal Behavior, and Crime Scene Search and Investigation. After retiring from the Archer County Sheriff's Office, he moved to Seymour, Texas in 1996, and farmed the Coufal Land for a number of years. He married Veda Huval on March 14, 2002. He loved his wife and children, and his Uncle Franklin, and enjoyed spending time with them cooking out, riding horses, camping, raising farm animals, farming, cattle herding and telling of his stories while being in law enforcement and farming. He enjoyed passing time at TJ Stockman's Store drinking coffee, and visiting with other farmers. He also enjoyed time attending auctions. He assisted his children in FFA, sports events and Cub Scouts. His proudest moments in life were the birth of his four children, his marriage to Veda, and all he accomplished in being Chief Deputy Sheriff of Archer County. He often spoke of the difference he was able to make in the lives of several young men he encountered and in helping them make a better life for themselves. His closest friend was David Hager of Henrietta, Texas. Steven was a pillar of support to his family and friends, and was always willing to help anyone who needed it. On January 14, 2003, two weeks after his 4th child was born, Steven suffered three strokes. The years that followed brought on more strokes for him, resulting in his inability to continue farming. Steven had a number of things that remained important to him despite his illness: his wife, children, his uncle, friends, motorcycles, cigars and cooking on the grill or smoker. Steven loved raising exotic birds, and having salt water aquariums. His favorite pets were Biscuit and Lillie, little Chihuahuas, who remained at his side at all times. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Mary Coufal of Seymour, Texas, and one uncle, Franklin Coufal, also of Seymour, Texas. He is survived by his wife, Veda of Seymour, Texas; one daughter, Marlena Hilbers of Gatesville, Texas; and three sons, Brandon Hilbers, AJ Hilbers, and Matthew Hilbers of Seymour, Texas; mother and father, Betty and Bernard Hilbers of Scotland, Texas; one sister, Anna Berend and her husband, Terry of Scotland, Texas; one niece, Chelsea Berend, and two nephews, Hayden and Brayden Berend. Steven received care, love and support from the staff of Integracare Hospice of Seymour, Texas, and his wife and children would like to extend a special thanks to them for helping make his passing peaceful. Steven was a wonderful loving husband, father and friend and will be truly missed. The family asks that any contributions or donations be made to Integracare Hospice in his memory.
