GREAT FALLS —Chuck Andrews, 91, of Great Falls, passed away Friday, November 6th, 2015 of natural causes at the Missouri River Manor where he was recovering from a broken hip. Chuck requested that no services be held for him and that his ashes be returned to the mountains in the Judith Gap area where his life adventure began. He was the youngest son of Adelbert B. Andrews and Jessie Kellie of Choteau and Judith Gap, Montana, and the last surviving child from his family of six brothers and six sisters. Chuck was born February 28, 1924 in Choteau, Montana. He went to school and graduated from Judith Gap High School on 18 May 1943 with six other seniors. His future wife, Beatrice Pellwitz was among the graduates as well. Immediately after graduation, he enlisted in the US Naval Reserves (V6) on 03 June 1943 in Butte, MT. After he completed basic training at the Naval Training Station (NTS), Farragut, Kootenai, ID, he was assigned to the commissioning crew of the new cargo ship, USS Caelum (AK-106). She was commissioned on 22 Oct 1943 in Wilmington, CA. She was responsible for delivering troops, goods and equipment to locations in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, and she earned one battle star during WWII for participation in the Marshall Island campaign. Chuck served on board Caelum for three years. He rose to the rank of Boatswains Mate Second Class (BM2c). On 13 Feb 1946, BM2 Andrews transferred to a separation center for discharge. After leaving the Navy, he returned to Judith Gap to work in a hardware store there, for a short duration, before starting his passion of road construction. He went to work for Nilson-Smith Construction Company in 1951 and worked for them building roads and highways throughout Montana through 1974. He had also worked summers for Nilson-Smith during the summers of his high school years, learning the trade. He then went to work for Hilde Construction Company in 1974 when Nilson-Smith Construction Company closed and again continued to build roads all over Montana for Hilde until he retired in 1988. After retirement Chuck kept busy rebuilding all of those roads throughout Montana "thru discussion" with all of his old fellow workers and also drove for Avis Car Rental service actually revisiting many of those same roads. When he returned from the war to Judith Gap in 1946 he married a school mate from Judith Gap, Beatrice B. Prellwitz on 27 Feb 1949 in Harlowton, Mt. They were the parents of four children; three sons and a daughter. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchild Jason. [Original obituary edited for content and privacy.]
