Iva Jane Cude was born August 1, 1896 in Newbern, Tennessee, the first daughter of A.D. and Emma Elnora (Patterson) Cude. She had two older brothers, one younger brother and one younger sister. In 1910 the family moved to the Viggo Community in Bee County, South Texas, near A.D.'s Uncle George Hufstedler, who had settled there several years earlier. Iva graduated from Beeville High School as an honor student in 1916. She wanted to go to Southwest Texas Normal School (now Texas State University) in San Marcos, but her father didn't think it was appropriate for young women to attend college. So she went to work in a millinery shop instead. Her father was killed in a farming accident in 1921, and Iva continued living with her mother, taking care of her. In 1926 or 1927 they moved to Austin so that Josephine could live with them while she attended the University of Texas (at Austin). Iva worked at Scarborough's Department Store. When her brother Don's wife Edith died in 1931, leaving their six-month old son Don Howard without a mother, Iva and her mother moved to Marble Falls to keep house for Don and take care of the baby. When Don remarried in 1935, Iva and her mother moved back to their farmhouse near Beeville, where she worked at the Woolworth Company for a couple of years. She married W.R. "Bud" Johnson in 1937, but he died in 1941, and her mother died in 1943. Iva and her siblings sold the farm, and she moved to a house in Beeville. In 1947 she married D.Z. Taylor, a widower with two grown sons. Iva worked for many years as bookkeeper, clerk and general manager of Paul Russell's Farm Supply. Iva was an active member of Friendship Baptist Church, near her home in the Orangedale Community. She loved plants and enjoyed sewing, cooking and organizing family get-togethers. She made several trips to Washington, D.C. to visit her sister Josephine, and they made some trips together. Iva died of uterine cancer July 17, 1964. Written by Kay Cude Past
