Dorcas Isobel Gray, daughter of Ann and Floyd Gray was born in Dallas, Texas on July 25, 1926, but to ask her, life began for Dorcas when she became Mrs. Billy Joe Monroe on September 6, 1947. A year later, she began her journey as mother to daughters, Cheryl and 6 years later to Nanci. Dorcas had many interesting jobs, but her favorite was her time spent at the State Fair of Texas. In 1950, she went to work with the Southwest Conference during football season, assigning seats in the Cotton Bowl to stake and option holders. These years awarded us with many colorful stories that have lived throughout many generations. In 1960, she assumed the title of Assistant Cotton Bowl Manager. In 1967, the family moved to Ft. Worth and joined American Airlines at the Inn of the Six Flags, as the Executive Secretary. Bill moved the family to Austin in 1970 and Dorcas began her 3rd career as a legal secretary to Wroe Owens, the former mayor of Austin. After 16 years, she and Bill retired and traveled the world. They visited England, Ireland, France, Portugal, Spain, Germany, India, Russia, Mexico, Morocco, Hong Kong, Hawaii, and Alaska. They moved to Colleyville in 2000 to be closer to family. She and Bill were members of First United Methodist Church of Hurst, Texas and they belonged to the Christian Homebuilders Sunday school class. Dorcas moved to Birmingham, Alabama in August of 2014, after the death of her beloved husband, to whom she was married for 66 years.
