Bio

Alvin John Marek, age 99, of Wallis, TX, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. He was born October 14, 1922 in East Bernard, Texas to Joseph Marek and Otilie Zapalac Marek. Alvin attended the Guardian Angel Catholic School and the Wallis Public School. He married the love of his life, Ann Priscilla Hluchan, on January 9, 1944. He enlisted in the Army on May 31, 1944 and was honorably discharged on May 8, 1946. He was a Corporal in the 1st Infantry Division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. During this time, he was honored with a Bronze Star Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, and Purple Heart Medal. Upon his return, Alvin went to work on the family farm and also worked for Gulf States Tube full time. After 28 years, he retired from Quanex (formerly the Gulf States Tube). Ann and Alvin raised four children. Alvin was raised in the Catholic faith and was a lifetime member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church. He was a member of American Legion Post #200, Knights of Columbus Council #3793, and KJT #16, all of Wallis. His most honorable achievement was serving during World War II in the United States Army. In his spare time, he loved spending time with his grandkids and great-grandkids, dancing and traveling with his wife, Ann, as well as hunting and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Albert Marek. He is survived by his wife of almost 78 years, Ann Hluchan Marek of Wallis; his sons, David Marek and wife, Bonnie, of Wallis, Ronald Marek of Houston, James Marek and wife, Cindy, of Wallis; and his daughter, Diane Sutton and husband, Randal, of Wallis; grandchildren, Neal Marek and wife, Karen, Wade Marek and wife, Meranda, Michaela Overturf and husband, Steven, Myles Marek and wife, Courtney, Mason Marek, Casie Sutton, Garrett Sutton, and Hayden Sutton; great-grandchildren, Kolton Marek, Karlie Marek, Bayleigh Marek, Hudson Marek, Knox Overturf, Madelyn Marek, and Ava Overturf; his caretakers, Alex "Alice" Ortiz, Houston Hospice, and VAHome-Based Primary Care; along with numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation was held at Knesek Funeral Home in Wallis on Monday, January 10, 2022, at 5:00 p.m., with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral mass was held at Guardian Angel Catholic Church on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, beginning at 11:00 a.m., with Father Thuy Nguyen officiating. Interment will follow at the Guardian Angel Cemetery in Wallis, TX.
