Harry "Don" Donald Palmer Born in Grand River, IA on 06/07/1919 Departed on 12/17/2007 and resided in Albuquerque, NM PALMER ----Harry "Don" Palmer, 88, a resident of Albuquerque since 1943, died Monday, December 17, 2007. Don was born June 7, 1919, the only child of Aletha Ferne Grimm Palmer and Harry R. Palmer. He was born in Clarke County, Iowa and was educated in a one –room schoolhouse, Osceola High School, Osceola Junior College, Simpson College and later at UNM. He taught for two years in a rural one-room school. May 25, 1941 he was united in marriage with Helen Grace Thomas. He served a short period in the Army Air Force and was given a Medical Discharge which resulted in a move to Albuquerque, in August 1943. He was employed for ten years with the Veterans Administration and for twenty years with the US Public Health Service, Division of Indian Health where he retired Dec. 31, 1975, as Area Financial Officer. He was preceded in death by his wife of sixty two years, Helen. He is survived by his son, Marvin R, Palmer, M. D. and his children, Naomi and Meredeth; by his son Keith E. Palmer, M.D., wife Christine and their children, Jacob, Grace, and Andrew; and by his former daughter-in-law, Kate O'Hare Palmer. Don was a member of American Legion Post 13 for over 30 years, Life Member of DAV, and a member of the Association of Government Accountants. He was a member of NARFE Chapter 80 and served two years as State Federation Treasurer. He served as a volunteer on the Board of Directors of the US New Mexico Federal Credit Union for thirty years. He was active in civic and community affairs. Don and Helen were active for many years in the Two-Som class of First Methodist Church, and were active for several years at Immanuel Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder. Don is loved by all and will be remembered for his calm and quit presence. He loved to travel and go on cruises. One of his hobbies was shopping and he accumulated an amazing amount of bargains, "stuff". The Flea Market will not be the same without his visits. Don will be missed by his many friends and family. Interment will be at Santa Fe National Cemetery where he will join his wife.
