During the night of February 19, 1955, searchlights swept Sandia Mountain as rescuers searched for the crash site of TWA Flight 260. The twin-engine plane slammed into the Dragon's Tooth, a prominent rock spire on the northeast edge of Domingo Baca/TWA Canyon. There were no survivors and 16 lives were lost. The wreckage smoldered for days. Originally the cause was believed to be that the pilots "intentionally flying the plane into the mountain" but, five years later changed the probable cause to "deviation from course for reasons unknown" with speculation that the fluxgate compass may have malfunctioned. Five New Mexico residents were aboard the plane. They are HOMER D. BRAY, 817 Grandview SE; MISS LOIS DEAN, 907 Richmond SE; the Rev. EARL F. DAVIS, 501A Quincy NE; WORTH H.
