Bernard Francis Litty was born May 21, 1918, in David City, Nebraska, the ninth child of Frank and Margaret (Gibb) Litty and died in Aurora, Nebraska on September 21, 2004, at the age of 86. Bernie graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1934 at the top of his class at the age of 15 years old. He was a former resident of the Polk area, where he farmed southwest of Polk for 32 years. He first owned and operated a two-man gas station with his brother, Lawrence in Burlington, Colorado. He entered active duty in the Army of the United States in 1940. On December 14, 1940, he married Frances M. Ratzlaff in Lawton, Oklahoma. Bernie was in the army over five years, thirty months was spent over seas in the South Pacific Theater. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant in February of 1946. He then worked for a bank in Denver, Colorado. In 1949, he and his wife moved to the Polk area from Colorado driving a tractor. He farmed until his retirement, when they moved to Aurora. Frances passed away in March of 1992. He married Melva McAllister in Trenton, Missouri on November 26, 1994. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Polk Legion Club #160. Bernie enjoyed playing games, especially cards, and working crossword puzzles. Bernard is survived by his wife Melva, of almost ten years; daughters, Bonnie (Mrs. Gary) Eberhardt of Aurora and Carol (Mrs. Bruce) Bedient of Polk; three grandchildren, Shawn Bedient of Polk, Holly (Mrs. Myron) Parsley of Lincoln, and Heidi (Mrs. Jeremy) Groves of Carter Lake, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Heather Dick of Wilbur, Kentucky, Bailey and Jake Parsley of Lincoln and Taitum Groves of Carter Lake, Iowa; one sister, Emma (Mrs. Gerald) Baysdorfer of Burbank, California; four stepsons, Ron, Dale, Alan and Doyle Cline and one step-daughter, Barbara Hunzeker and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Frances; five brothers, Lawrence, Andrew, Leo, Fred and Jack Litty and two sisters, Marie (Mrs. Joseph) Hilger and Loretta Litty.
