Bio
Rachel Loretta Gant Barrier, a beloved wife and mother, passed away on November 26th from pneumonia. She peacefully entered the presence of the Lord at age 81 while surrounded by her loving family. She was born to Ollie and Leffel Gant on November 9, 1940, and graduated from Crozier Tech High School in 1959. On December 23, 1960, at First Baptist Dallas, the late Dr. W.A. Criswell married her to Ellis Barrier after a four-month engagement. In 1977, the Barrier family moved to Gunter, Texas, to raise their four children. Her husband called her his "rock" during their 61-year marriage. While raising her children, she worked as a secretary for various companies, most notably First Baptist Church of Gunter, where she worked alongside Pastor Scott Jordan until her retirement in 2005. Rachel used her gift of hospitality to befriend and lift the spirits of the brokenhearted through food and fellowship. Her life and character are best expressed by Proverbs 31:28-29: "Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all." Rachel was a woman of deep faith in our Lord Jesus, known for her joy, kindness, caring heart, and playful personality. She was a friend, a shoulder to cry on, a gracious hostess, and her family's cheerleader. She spent her senior years encouraging, loving and caring for her 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Rachel was preceded in death by her parents Ollie and Leffel Gant, her brother Leffel Last Jr. and Rodney Gant and his wife Katherine. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Ellis Knight Barrier, her children, Ellis Kyle Barrier(Tonya), Jennifer Barrier Jones, Kristie Barrier Stith(Jeff), Morris Knight Barrier(Heidi), grandchildren- Stephanie Jones, Mallory Jones, Andrew Barrier, Eric Barrier(Alex), Ben Stith(Meagan), Ryan Barrier(Elizabeth), Hannah Stith Pennington(Brett), Bethany Stith, Abbie Stith Douglas(Micah), Julia Stith, Joshua Barrier, Caleb Stith, Anna Kate Barrier and Avery Barrier, and one great-granddaughter, Sadie Jean Pennington. Rachel leaves behind her loving sister, Louise Cucovatz and many adoring nieces and nephews. She is forever adored and will be greatly missed. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday, November 30, 2021, at the First Baptist Church of Gunter, 99 Gentle Creek Lane, Gunter, TX 75058, with Pastor Scott Jordan, officiating. Burial will follow at the Gunter Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior of service at the church.
