Ira Ernest Wilkerson, 79, of Keith Springs, long identified with Franklin County politics and a former County official, died Saturday morning at Emerald Hodgson Hospital following an extended illness. He leaves more than 72 immediate survivors. Mr. Wilkerson was a leader in the Democratic party from the 16th Precinct. A retired employee of the state highway department, he served a school commissioner of the 16th District in 1944 and as a magistrate of the old Franklin County Quarterly Court in 1939 and again in 1966. Mr. Wilkerson was a native of Jackson County, Alabama, born August 5, 1902. He was the son of Mike and Mary Melissa Williams Wilkerson. He was a member of Keith Springs Baptist Church. Services were today at Moore Cortner Chapel. The Rev. O.P. Etheridge, the Rev. Bobby McGee and the Rev. Neil Foster officiated. Burial was in Keith Springs Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Eliza May Wilkerson; five sons, William H., Hazel Crest, Illinois, Prentice, James M. and Charlie T., all of Keith Springs, Terry W. Wilkerson, Cowan; five daughters, Mrs. Barbara Mangum and Mrs. Lena Steele, Keith Springs, Mrs. Judy Sisk, Harvey, Illinois, Mrs. Linda Davis, Salina, Kansas and Mrs. Jo Marino, Hazel Crest; stepmother Mrs. Lucy Wilkerson, Fackler, Alabama; seven brothers, Clarence, Hollywood, Alabama, Clyde, Scottsboro, Alabama, Edward and Mike Wilkerson Junior, Fackler, Elbert Miller, Princeton, Alabama, and Olbert Miller, Huntland; seven sisters, Mrs. Pearl Judge, Mrs. Sadie Stephens, Winchester, Mrs. Lena Cornelison, Mrs. Velma Grider, and Mrs. Marie Ledbetter, all of Hollywood, and Mrs. Pauline Durham And Mrs. Hoag, both of Scottsboro; 33 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
