Bio

February 12, 1929 - November 4, 2015 Doyle Brown Had a Great Life Doyle Brown was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend and artist. He was born on February 12, 1929. His parents, Bessie Kosthoryz and Ralph Brown were living in Austin at the time he was born but moved while he was still an infant to San Antonio. He saw his parents were very much in love with each other. Doyle and his brother, Raymond Brown, were two happy kids who had plenty of adventures and some interesting pets. Doyle became a competitive gymnast, and trained at the neighborhood Boys' Club on the high bar, and even had one in the back yard. The whole family would sit under the big pecan tree and have Sunday dinner at the picnic table. Doyle graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1947, and the family was extended when Doyle married Naomi Brockman, his high school love, in 1948. He would truly never stop loving her. When I see the photos of young Doyle and Naomi smiling at each other, I know I see true love. The happy couple had many great experiences. In 1951 they moved to Chicago where Doyle attended and graduated from the Art Institute of Chicago, and in that cold and windy city, a big change from San Antonio, met many great friends and lived among artists and also had a fine education. His love of art was strong, but he took other academic courses, and really enjoyed learning and studying. Naomi was working in accounting at Walgreens, to support the couple, and they lived comfortably. After graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Doyle joined the Army, where he was stationed at Frankfurt AM and lived off base with his wife in Bad Vilbel. There they met more and more great friends. Because Frankfurt is centrally located in Europe it was easy for them to take their grey goose, a Citroen car, on many trips all over Europe. This gave him a chance as an artist to see the great works of art in Museums, and explore the architecture of great European cities. When the couple came back to San Antonio, and moved into their home, their first child, Cynthia Lynn was on the way. Doyle took a job in the Edgewood school district as an art and English teacher. He turned his garage into an art studio. The family grew to include a second child, Keith Harrison. Soon after Keith was born, Doyle began working at North East school district. He also taught Commercial Art at San Antonio College at night. Doyle was a devoted father, and was always an exceptional teacher. His studio was full of art, and smelled of oil paint, and held his great ideas. He filled his home with his paintings. He built bookshelves, and fireplaces, a sailboat and even a telescope. He was always creating and reaching for the stars. He welcomed friends and neighbors to his home and had great friends next door. He was an exemplary teacher and retired after many years teaching Art at Robert E. Lee High School. He and Naomi took cruises, spent time at the family retreats at the coast and the farm, and travelled after retirement. As he grew older he gave up art, and later his Alzheimer's condition impaired his abilities though he continued to love his family, friends, and neighbors. When his grandson came into his life he would take him out and collect pecans in the back yard and crack them to share. He shared so much of his joy for life and his way of looking at things with joy, and humor, he was admired by those who knew him, and he leaves life full of his art and creations. He also lives on through the great artists who studied with him, and their art, and those he inspired to be artists. Doyle's last days were spent at the Landing at Stone Oak, where he was cared for by the staff, as well as by the staff of Harbor Hospice. Doyle died on November 4, 2015. He is survived by his wife Naomi, his children Cynthia Lynn McLemore, son-in-law Morgan McLemore, son Keith Brown, and grandson Morgan Eugene McLemore. There will be no service, those wishing to honor Doyle's memory can send donations to the Alzheimer's Association at 800-272-3900.
