She was born on 18 Mar 1843 in Siddessen, Westfalen, Germany to Franz Anton Dohmann and Christina Augusta Böling. She was baptized on 19 Mar 1843 in Sts. Peter & Paul Kirche in Gehrden. Her godparents were Elisabeth Dohmann geb Münekehoff (her grandmother) and Josephine Dohmann (her aunt). Her full name was Catherine Josephina Dohmann & she went by her middle name.
