Bio
Sadly Joan Engle passed away peacefully in her sleep on 7/13/2021. Joan was fierce, had a great personality; everyone who met Joan loved Joan. She was bright, witty, funny, very kind, and fun to be around. She attended grade school on Beacon hill and graduating with honors from Franklin High. While in high school, she told her mother she would apply to Sears to earn some money for college. Her mother replied, "Why start at the bottom, go to the top and apply at Frederick and Nelson (the Nordstrom of that era). So she did and became an elevator operator, earning money for tuition to the University of Washington. She studied ancient history. After graduation, Joan taught at the prestigious Annie Wright seminary for girls. After leaving Annie Wright, she applied and was accepted to teach ancient history at the Hauge in the Netherlands. Joan continued her travels in Europe and, briefly residing in Paris before returning home and choosing to reside on Capitol Hill for 40+ years. Everyone knows her on the hill, and her hangout is the Deluxe Bar and Grill, where she has been known to imbibe on a martini or 2 occasionally. She worked at Ranier Beach High school with the athletic program. All the students loved her. She moved to independent living in Woodinville around 2019 and eventually Kirkland Wa. There will be a celebration of life on Aug 14, 2021 from Noon-3pm at The Chelsea Apts - Social Lounge located 11720 97th Lane NE, Kirkland, WA 98034 Published on July 27, 2021
