Bio

Joseph "Joe" Merka, Jr, 92, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Broadmoor Place. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 pm Monday, August 30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Msgr. Gleissner Mausoleum in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 9 – 11:00 am Monday with a rosary 11:00 am at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan. Joe was born January 11, 1929 in Bryan, the son of Joseph F Merka, Sr and Anne Merka. He attended & graduated school in Bryan, Texas. He later worked and retired from Lone Star Gas Company after 40 years of service. Joe enjoyed deer hunting with friends & family, working with his hands and dancing; especially waltzing with Bobbie. He loved taking trips to Louisiana for crawfish with Bobbie & their friends Charlie & Minnie Gardner. Joe was a member of the St Joseph Ushers Club, Knights of Columbus, and an Army Veteran. He was a long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Joe is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Bobbie Merka; parents Joseph & Ann Merka; sister Francis McNair; and a nephew, Brandon Denk. He is survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Eddie "Butch" and Joyce Denk; niece, Kimberly Harper and husband Clay Harper; great-niece, Shelby Harper and nephew Bill Ray McNair and his family. The Family wishes to thank the Staff and Hospice Care at Broadmoor Place for the outstanding care they provided to Joe during his residence at the facility Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Joseph Catholic School or a charity of your choice.
