A Funeral Mass for Mary Lou Butts, age 88, of O'Neill will be at 10:30 am Friday, September 3, 2021 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill. Burial will follow in the O'Neill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm Thursday, September 2, 2021 at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill with 4:30 pm Catholic Daughters Rosary and a 7 pm Parish Rosary. Mary Lou passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021 at Avera St. Anthony's Hospital in O'Neill. Mary Louise Gartner was born on November 11, 1932 in Hartington, Nebraska to Robert Sr. and Mary (Maly) Gartner. The family moved for a time to Stuart, before settling in the Chambers area. Mary Lou graduated from Chambers High School in 1950. She then earned a Teaching Certificate from Wayne Normal School (now Wayne State). Mary Lou met Jim Butts at the O'Neill roller skating rink. The high school sweethearts were married on August 13, 1951 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill. To this union were born four children; Rick, Gary, Cheryl, and Dave. Mary Lou taught for two years in country schools in the Amelia and Chambers areas. Mary Lou worked as the bookkeeper for the family business, Jim's Feed and Seed, while raising her family. Once the children were grown, she worked at the NRCS office until she retired in the late 1990s. Mary Lou was a woman of faith, deeply devoted to her loving Father, her husband, family and many friends. She lived an active life, dedicating her early years to raising her family and later to volunteering time in the community, playing golf, bridge, and pitch. Mary Lou spent countless hours gathered around the table for coffee with her friends and was always up for a last-minute road trip. She loved getting the family together and spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved watching Cornhusker football and volleyball, as well as baking and knitting. Mary Lou was an active member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill and very involved with the Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a Eucharistic Minister as well as an Associate Member of the Sisters of St. Francis. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Mary Lou is survived by her husband of 70 years, Jim Butts of O'Neill; four children, Rick (Diana) Butts of O'Neill, Gary Butts of O'Neill, Cheryl (Kevin) Gilg of Cantonment, Florida, Dave (Dawn) Butts of O'Neill; 11 grandchildren, Michael Grinnell, Gina (Steven) Ainsworth, David (Jennifer) Grinnell, Jason (Jamie) Butts, Misty Butts, Chris (Sara) Butts, Jayte Butts, Melissa (Chuck) Peterson, Anna Gilg, Justina (Aaron) Weinrich, James Butts; 18 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; three siblings, Betty (Stan) Watson of O'Neill, Anne (Charlie) Porter of Fremont, Bobby (Roxanne) Gartner of Chambers; many nieces and nephews. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter-in-law, Judy Butts; three brothers, Robert Gartner, Donald (Beverly) Gartner, L.J. Gartner.
